Challenge
Create a mobile community where travelers can publish detailed plans, discover destinations, find compatible travel companions, request to join trips, and coordinate through direct or group conversations.
Role & Collaboration
I was the sole software developer, responsible for the Flutter application, Firebase architecture, serverless functions, maps and location integrations, realtime communication, notifications, advertising, and release work. I worked closely with a product manager who advised the product direction and mentored me extensively on mobile UI and UX — a collaboration worth crediting alongside the solo technical build.
Solution
I built a Flutter application that combined structured trip publishing, location-aware discovery, traveler profiles, identity and trust features, join-request workflows, private and group chat, community discussions, social interactions, notifications, content sharing, and moderation-related tools. Firebase services supported authentication, documents, realtime messaging, media storage, notifications, and serverless workflows.
Technical Contribution
I implemented Provider-based state management, filtered and paginated feeds, Google Maps and place search, image-processing and upload workflows, Firebase authentication, Firestore data, Realtime Database chat, Cloud Messaging, TypeScript Cloud Functions, deep links, sharing, reporting, account deletion, responsive themes, and mobile advertising.
- Location-aware trip discovery with maps, geocoding, and place search
- Realtime direct and group messaging tied to trip participation
- Trust-oriented features including identity verification workflows and reporting
- Internationalization groundwork across 17 locale resources (English-only at release)
Outcome
I released Travel Meet App on Google Play and continued iterating through February 2024, reaching more than 100 downloads. It did not achieve the adoption my collaborator and I hoped for, so I made the deliberate decision to stop active investment rather than continue maintaining a product that hadn’t found traction. The experience was a genuine lesson that a technically complete product is different from achieving distribution and product-market fit — and that product discovery needs to progress alongside engineering.
Judgment to discontinue active investment rather than misrepresent limited adoption as success.
